STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
by
RUUD LEEUW
My focus in photography, as well as other interests, shifts and changes..
Around 2012 I became more interested in photography's 'greats' and found myself more frequently visiting photo exhibitions and buying photobooks.
Photographers such as Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Robert Frank, John Margolies, Arnold Newman, Anton Corbijn, Steve McCurry, Werner Bischof, Annie Leibovitz, Marc Riboud, et cetera, captured my interest. Photobooks were bought and in subsequent years I started actively collecting 'art' photobooks, many of them secondhand.
Gradually I found myself less interested in portraits and landscapes and my interest evolved to documentary, photojournalism and streetphotography.
'Humanist Photography' (wikipedia) offers a wide range of photography.
In the last two years streetphotography began to take up a large portion of my travel photography. In 2016 I bought a Fujifilm X100T camera for dedicated 'streetphotography'. Soon replaced by a Panasonic Lumix G (DMC-GX80) and in 2020 I bought a secondhand Leica Q to compare it with the GX-80.
The images were shared on my travel pages, Blog and Flickr & Facebook accounts. In Sep.2016 I started this page, a gallery of such images I am most pleased with myself. In August 2020 I created a colour page of this work.
And followed by Photographers & musicians (street) in March 2021.
"There is nothing in the world that does not have a decisive moment" -Henri Cartier-Bresson
"Seeing is the paradise of the soul"
-Pietro Spanno, eye doctor, elected Pope in 1276
"The basic belief in art, is the basic belief in the goodness of mankind" -Vladimir Nabokov
"I’ve always said that the experience of taking the images is more important than the image itself." -Phil Penman
"The photographer is an armed version of the solitary walker reconnoitering, stalking, cruising the urban inferno, the voyeuristic stroller who discovers the city as a landscape of voluptuous extremes. Adept of the joys of watching, connoisseur of empathy, the flâneur finds the world picturesque." -Susan Sontag, 1977
In Sep.2021 I bought a Leica M-P (Typ 240) to experience Leica rangefinder photography. By 2023 my Leica equipment had changed to a Leica Q2 Reporter and a Leica M10-P (w/ 1958 Summicron 50 & 1968 35).
My About_me has more details about my evolving photography and equipment.

Superb quality for sale, antiques and certainly no fleamarket stuff on display.

Becoming a common sight: small dogs in a stroller

I had bought a wayang kulit shadow puppet whilst the seller was conversing with the man known as
'De Kuif' (EN=The Quiff)... I had seen him before, at another 'brocante market'.
Wajang is a loanword in Dutch from Javanese. In Javanese, wayang literally means "shadow" or "ghost".
The derived meaning of this word is a specific form of puppetry that uses shadow or light effects.

LIBERATION RIDE (DRIVE) 2025 ('BEVRIJDINGSRIT')

The Liberation Ride ('Bevrijdingsrit') pauzed in a few towns, a.o. here De Steeg. Fine opportunity to get a closer look.

Mostly Canadians liberated this region, and Brits. No flags for the Yanks this year (you'll understand why!).

LAMMETJESDAG
I had hoped to see
the sheep coming down from the Veluwe grounds through the streets of Rheden, but they had
suffered from the Bluetongue disease (Wikipedia) and had given birth late to their lambs; the herd
was too weak
to move a considerable distance and instead this horse-drawn-tram could bring visitors to/from the sheepfold.

The market offered sheepproducts and included stalls which gave insights in weaving threads in the old fashioned way.
Baking bread on sticks and talk things over. Everybody seemed to know each other here!
