Visit to Venice, Italy

The first time I visited Venice was with my parents, must have been aged 10 or so; that would be around 1965 or 1966.
The next time was in 1978, with my girlfriend (later my wife). Another visit followed in 2009, rather more for allowing my aging mother one last peek at her favourite city. My visit in 2015 started to included personal 'themes'.

In 2020 we benefitted from the Corona pandemic travel restrictions: other continents than Europe were notably absent.
This time I went for that famous festival: Il Carnevale!
I hope you will enjoy my report on 'La Serenissima', also known as 'La Dominante', 'Queen of the Adriatic', 'City of Water', 'City of Masks', 'City of Bridges', 'The Floating City' and 'City of Canals'.

FOSCARI PALACE & VICINITY

Our visit to Venice, Italy (Feb.2022)
Our Palazzo Foscari, on the Grand Canal, provided perfect accommodation.

The visit this time to Venice was for 'Il Carnevale'. Photo take in front of Palazzo Foscari.

The 'traghetto' next to our hotel went across the Canal Grande to Rialto's fish market.

View from the Foscari Palazzo terrace over the Grand Canal. Peaceful.

Our visit to Venice, Italy (Feb.2022)
Not so peaceful! This was at times (weekends) a bottle neck proceeding from Rialto to our hotel, the Calle Dolphin
ending on the Rio dei S.S. Apostoli, and through the 'Sotoporto Falier', then crossing over a small bridge
onto Campo S.S. Apostoli where we continued on the (wide) Strada Nova with its many restaurants and shops.

View on the Rio dei S.S. Apostoli and the bridge onto Campo S.S. Apostoli. Ten minutes from the Rialto Bridge.
There was an excellent gelato shop there, also mentioned on food tours (which we did not know at the time).

Strada Nova, not so busy (wide enough).

Recommended restaurant when you tire of pasta & pizza: Old Wild West. On Strada Nuova and Ponte Nicolò Pasqualigo.

RIALTO & VICINITY

One never tires of photographing the Rialto Bridge.

Fish market near Rialto, am always amazed by these 'strange fruits'.

SAN MARCO & VICINITY

Our visit to Venice, Italy (Feb.2022)
Except for the weekend we stayed in Venice, there were no crowds, not even at Piazza San Marco. No doubt due Covid-19.

View on Palazzo Ducale.
In all these years I've never been inside. The past few years I just did not want to bother with the online reservations.

Along the Piazzetta San Marco someone had created his own version of Il Carnevale!

On Tuesday's there's a large market here, on the Riva di Corinto, but found nothing of interest to us.

Our visit to Venice, Italy (Feb.2022)
Well, I say 'nothing of interest', I did score this photo I liked!

Our visit to Venice, Italy (Feb.2022)
Blue skies and windblown: we could see the mountains!

Our visit to Venice, Italy (Feb.2022)
Lido beach was deserted, such a contrast to the summer! But worse for us: nowhere a restaurant to be found
along the long, long march on Lungomare Guglielmo Marconi. Not until we got to Granviale Santa Maria Elisabetta.

MURANO

Our visit to Venice, Italy (Feb.2022)
We'd been here before, to Murano, and it was a bit of a mistake to go this time. Hardly a restaurant was open.
We did buy some souvenirs. Glass manufacturers here are hard hit these day due rising energy costs.

FOOD & DRINKS

(Snack) Bar Tiziano. According to the owner, molto simpatico, it was the hang out for locals. And so we did return!

Bar Tiziano in Salizada S. Giovanni Grisostomo.
An unpretentious snackbar with a friendly atmosphere for drinks, sandwiches, pasticcini, torte dolci, & traditional dishes.
I will surely visit again upon a next visit to Venezia.

Our visit to Venice, Italy (Feb.2022)
Both having a cigar and an Spritz Aperol. As did we (the beverage!), though I sometimes changed to a Spritz Campari.
I used my compact Canon S120 here, which I consider my little spy camera!

The canals still show reasonable clear water, possibly because of less tourists and less giant cruise ships docking.

A working boat. 'Pordelio' seems to refer to a location>
After positioning the boat they hammered those large iron poles into the ground, but for what purpose,
except to fixate the boat..?

Our visit to Venice, Italy (Feb.2022)
Small market on Campo Santa Margherita. No doubt these markets will be larger during the summer.

The Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo (also called the Palazzo Contarini Minelli dal Bovolo) is a small palazzo in Venice, best known
for its external multi-arch spiral staircase known as the 'Scala Contarini del Bovolo' (literally, 'of the snail').
The palazzo is located in a small, less-travelled calle (street) near Campo Manin, about half-way between Campo San Bartolo,
at the foot of the Rialto, and Campo Santo Stefano. The staircase leads to an arcade, providing an impressive view of the
city roof-tops. This palazzo has been visitable since February 2016 after renovations, but found it now closed.

Palazzo Salviati is a palace on the Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro district (or sestieri) in Venice.
The building was built as a shop and the furnace of the Salviati family between 1903 and 1906, designed by
the architect Giacomo Dell'Olivo. The company was founded in 1859 by Antonio Salviati. In 1924 the building
underwent a major renovation, which involved the addition of an extra floor and the placement of a large mosaic façade.

DRESSED UP

Our visit to Venice, Italy (Feb.2022)
Yes, Il Carnevale is a time of festival and festivities, in other words: dress up! And bring a camera..
