Built by William Nelson in 1983, N2051Z is a Nelson Amphibian, obviously c/n is… 1 !

Next to the Lake (actually 2 lakes: Lake Spenard and Lake Hood, connected by a canal: the runway) is a
gravel runway for land-based bushplanes on wheels. There always seems to be a plane in the air wherever you look..

Piper PA-18-150 N9725P (c/n 18-7609004), reg'd Kris Dean 08Dec1998.
I've done flightseeing from several places in Alaska, but not yet from the obvious spot: Lake Hood!

Plenty of land-based planes here too!

DHC-2 N77KZ c/n 950 was seen for sale here in 2003 too!
This is a former Dutch AirForce (S-1, KLu.) Beaver! Another one is operating with Willow Air; they were phased out during the 1970s and came back to the US.

By Sep.2016 I learned DHC-2 N77KZ had been reg'd on 19Mar16 to Michael Wade Renfro of Renfro's Alaskan Adventures in Bethel,AK (he also operates a Noorduyn Norseman - see HERE..). Both operate on floats.
A photo sent to me in Feb.2018 shows it on wheels, Photos by Friends & Guests #53
In 2019 it suffered extensive damage but my Photos by Friends & Guests #61 has a Nov.2020 update, restored and making its way to Bethel,AK! |

DHC-2 C-GFDS (c/n 1269; ex/ 57-2583, N31343) has made its way up to Anchorage, perhaps a better chance
for a sale? I came across this very same C-GFDS in Sioux Lookout, Ontarion in 2007!

Between the lake shore and W. International Airport Road is a parking lot with planes parked, not cars..

Passing over Lake Spenard, on finals, for landing in the Hood Canal..

DHC-2 N9877R (c/n 1180)
See N9877R also photographed on JoeJoe Prince's gallery on my website.
I seem to remember
one could circle the lake(s) on Aircraft Rd, but not anymore, a parking lot and viewing
area force
the driver on Postmark Dr and take a left on Aviation Dr (circling contra-clockwise as I did).
The creation of the viewing area is an excellent thing and probably safer, as motorists would stop any way.
The viewing area sits right at the edge of the Hood Canal; bring mosquito repellent with you.. |

Another take off from the Hood Canal. We had brilliant weather during our entire 10-day travel through Alaska except for the last 2 days getting cloudy and sometimes a drizzle falling (which actually is quite common summer weather here).
