Kenneth Swartz wrote me (May 2025): "The photo of C-GYBA was taken at the south terminal of Vancouver airport. It might have been an image I took for Aviation Letter Photo Service in the late 1970s.
If I recall correctly, Yellow Bird got the aircraft from Pacific Alaska in the Seattle area and gradually stripped
it of all paint until it was natural metal with a large yellow logo and titles." |
Keith Simpson wrote me in August 2025:
"Recent research conducted on Harrison Airways of Vancouver, BC, led me to a former Harrison pilot named Cliff Sandison, who founded Yellow Bird Air in 1979 with a DC-3, C-GYBA.
I was interested to find your informative page about this aircraft and its later life in the USA, and even more surprised to read the discussion about the image of the aircraft at Vancouver by an "unknown" photographer, sporting a stripped metal tail.
After scrupulously studying the aircraft position and cloud pattern, I believe the (above) slide was taken by me on 15 March 1980, the same day of Glen Etchell's visit, whom I have known since my time in Vancouver (I now reside in the UK).
In fact, I have Glen's slide in my possession, which replaced my original with the Twin Otter in the background when I foolishly sold off a large portion of my original collection in the early 2000s.
Coincidentally, I have been in touch with Glen just recently, and have arranged for our adult son to act as "courier" for a few timetables from Glen's admirable collection when he visits us shortly.
I was never fully pleased with any of my early images, as I was still perfecting the craft (and probably a little shy to get closer to the machines!) with my small Olympus viewfinder, and had yet to upgrade to a Pentax SLR, which was far more effective.
My thanks to you, Sean Keating, John Kimberley and Glen for the enlightening comments on your website,
which I am hoping you will allow me to reference to expand the Harrison Airways story, which is scheduled to be part of the Propliner 2026 edition."
Thanks again,
Keith. |
